Unsaturated polyester resins
Unsaturated polyester resins represent a group of thermosetting polymers with a reactive group -ÑÍ=ÑÍ-.
Unsaturated polyesters formed by polycondensation of unsaturated dicarboxylic acids with polyatomic alcohols are most widely used. Normally these unsaturated polyesters are used as their 60-70% solutions in various monomers being copolymerized with which they form non-fusible and insoluble polymers of spatial structure.
In production of unsaturated polyester resins styrene is the most widely used cross-linking monomer owing to its availability, low price, and high hardening activity. Styrene is the main monomer for resins from unsaturated polyesters. It is a good solvent for unsaturated polyesters. Styrene reacts with polyester by polymerization using unsaturated chemical bonds and forms cross-linked non-fusible and insoluble products which mainly determines good mechanical and thermal properties of finished products from resins produced from unsaturated polyesters. Only combination of polyester and styrene gives properties characteristic
of these resins.
Unsaturated polyester resins differ from many other thermosetting polymers in that they are capable of setting at a room or relatively low temperature without practically any by-products. It makes it possible to manufacture goods from them (in particular reinforced plastics) at low pressures.
Currently production of decorative finishing materials and structural goods based on styrene containing unsaturated polyester resins is being intensively developed. “Khimpostavschik” has mastered technology of production of unsaturated polyester resins which offer a number of advantages over traditionally used resins (PN-1, PN-12 and others). The range of grades offered allows to meet any technological requirements and to select the most suitable grade for production of various goods.
Unsaturated polyesters are widely used in technology: in production
of molded insulation for electrical – and radio technology, cements, coatings, and also glass-fiber reinforced plastics for motor-, shipbuilding – and aircraft industries. In motor industry they are used for manufacturing vehicle bodies, bumpers, styling parts. Unsaturated polyester and glass fabrics are used in molding boat hulls, to repair motor vehicle bodies and boat hulls. These resins are cheaper and easier to handle than epoxy resins. They are less viscous, more workable, less sensitive to the hardener quantity and can quickly harden under normal conditions. Unsaturated polyester resins are well compatible with various pigments, paints, plasticizers, and dry free-flowing fillers (chalk, talc, sand, kaolin, etc.). Decorative products (fittings, statuettes), polymer concretes and synthetic stones (table tops, window sills, wall skirting, mantel pieces, wash sinks, bath tubs, and tiles) are manufactured from them by molding.
Unlike GOST standard for conventional PN-1, technical specifications (TU) for PolyChim resin range are much more tight which allows provide the customer with a more stable quality resin. The resins contain various modifying additives which decrease labor inputs when processing them, improve reactive capacity of the resins and quality of finished goods.
